2. Reading Passage: Urbanisation Trends

[Paragraph 1] Urbanisation refers to the population shift from rural to urban areas, leading to the growth of cities and towns. Over the past few decades, this process has accelerated rapidly across the world, especially in developing nations. People move to cities in search of better job opportunities, superior healthcare services, and higher standards of education that are often lacking in countryside regions.
[Paragraph 2] However, rapid urbanisation creates serious economic, social, and environmental challenges. One of the most pressing issues is overcrowding. As millions of rural migrants arrive in metropolitan areas every year, cities face acute shortages of affordable housing. This often results in the expansion of informal settlements and slums, where living conditions are poor and access to clean water and sanitation is severely limited.
[Paragraph 3] Furthermore, urban infrastructure is frequently pushed to its limits. Heavy traffic congestion, inadequate public transportation, and rising air pollution have become common problems in major cities. High unemployment rates among unskilled migrants also contribute to social instability and increased crime rates.
[Paragraph 4] To address these problems, urban planners and policymakers must focus on sustainable urban development. This includes upgrading existing slums, investing in eco-friendly public transport, and promoting green spaces. In addition, rural development strategies should be implemented to create jobs in countryside areas, reducing the pressure of massive migration on big cities.
